Here We Go..!

11) Flame of the Forest

The Flame of the Forest is easily identifiable by its flaming-red flowers covering the crown in full bloom. This medium to large-sized tree is native to Madagascar. Primaily seen as ornamental tree species, they are also planted to provide shades in parks and open spaces. They are often described as spectacular and beautiful trees. Adding that to the fact the flowers usually bloom only after a prolonged dry spell and taking decades for maturity have probably led to its heritage tree status.

12) Lighthouse

The Lighthouse, visible from 18 miles/30 kilometres away, guided many ships to safe entourage into Singapore Port. It was erected in 1903. The light was created by a burner fuelled by kerosene, which generated 20 000 candlepower. It was darkened every 17 seconds by a lowering metallic cylinder around it for 3 seconds, resulting in a 20 seconds cycle. The lighthouse closed in 1958 as taller buildings around the area made it invinsible from the sea.

13) Elephant Ear Fig Tree

The Elephant Ear Fig Tree is unique, with its rounded leaves and young shoots of intense mahogany colour. Its fruits are used in making fruit jams.

14) Flagstaff

The Flagstaff served its purpose to the Singapore Habour, by indicating important information with regard to the arrival, identity, location and status of ships. This allows the merchants to be ready for bargaining with the shippers upon their arrival. Originally erected in 1825, the wooden flagstaff was later replaced by a steel structure. The first signal light was a simple lantern attached to the top of the Flagstaff. The other purpose of the Flagstaff was the warning of any fire in the close proximity within the town. The Flagstaff would hoist a series of flags that are noticeable from the town below. It also let the firemen know the wherabouts of the fire.

15) Tree Appreciation Time

Terap

Madras Thorn

Silk Cotton

Fort Canning Park is one of the 2 areas in Central Singapore which housed a wide variety of flora and fauna (the other being Botanic Gardens). There are also plenty of Heritage trees such as the Malayan Banyan, Kapok, Terap and Madras Thorn.

16) Fort Canning Service Reservoir

The Fort Canning Service Reservoir was constructed in 1926. It was used to supplement the large impounding reservoir, by storing the water and allowing the water to flow down the hill and into the houses. Earlier in 1822, there was already a small reservoir constructed to supply water to ships which called at the port.
